AMD Project Enters Restoration Phase
10/28/2005
CNC's Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) project, conducted with a grant from DEP Growing Greener (PA Department of Environmental Protection) under the direction of CNC Project Manager John Hamm, completed the initial study phase this past spring 2005.
The initial study phase identified nine major mine discharges located between Bridgeville and Carnegie and polluting 15 miles of Chartiers Creek. The initial AMD project phase (which lasted from July 2001 through June 2003) studied and documented the chemistry, flow and general degradation resulting from these discharges.
The studies were conducted by Robert Hedin, Ph.D., ecologist, Hedin Environmental, and Thomas Gray, P.E., engineer, GAI Consultants. Phase II was kicked off on June 20, 2005 with a public meeting at the Carnegie Borough Building to inform stakeholders about the results of the study and the proposed restoration plan. For more details on the results of the study and proposed restoration plan, see AMD Project on the Projects page of this web site.
